Tip 1: Go Outside

My sister and I decided to go outside and try something new to improve our mood.

Have you been feeling unmotivated, groggy, or down in the dumps?

If yes, it could be due to the weather. Growing up in Michigan, I have always felt this way during the winter months. Not having the sun shining bright, my mood would automatically be down. Even if you see the sun all year round, these tips will still bring you greater happiness.

  1. GO OUTSIDE

Whether the sun is out or not, getting outside to receiving fresh air will bring you more oxygen, and the natural light with brighten your mood. Going for a little walk will bring you a new view from your home.

  2. EXERCISE

Just a 30-minute workout can give you a burst of energy to start your day. Youtube has so many at-home exercises you can do in your living room and or bedroom. Doing a workout every day can also reduce any stress you may have.

  3. HANG OUT WITH FRIENDS

Make plans to do something fun with friends or family. As humans having social interaction and connections is an essential aspect of our health. Even planning a call to chat with a friend will benefit as well.

  4. EAT A BALANCED DIET

Consuming balanced meals rich in fruits, vegetables, proteins, and healthy fats will help fuel your brain to function correctly and eliminate brain fog.

  5. MEDITATE

Meditating helps reduce negative thoughts and reduce depression. You can do this in silence or put on relaxing music from Youtube and focus on your breathing. Try the 4-7-8 breathing technique; this consists of breathing in for 4 seconds, holding the breath for 7 seconds, and exhaling for 8 seconds.

During college, I suffered from the winter blues. There was a time where I didn’t want to see anyone, and I always had brain fog and was tired. My productivity and motivation were at an all-time low. These methods helped improve my mood during the winter months, especially in Michigan, where the sun rarely comes out during this time.

Once I started implementing all of these tips, my motivation, mood, and happiness increased. Hopefully, these methods can help you improve your overall happiness no matter what season it is.
